One of Virgo’s first projects was the Integrated Postal Network: Virgo collaborated as a subcontractor for Unisys in the implementation of this integrated solution, which had a budget of nearly 4 billion HUF and is still used in post offices today. Shortly after, the company also participated in the development of OTP Bank’s credit management system.

Perhaps Virgo’s very first independent project, and its first Java-based development, was a telephone directory project—the MATÁV online inquiry service. This is also a great Virgo story: the company won the tender issued by Magyar Telekom’s predecessor, Axelero, despite being new to the industry. With a delivery deadline of barely three weeks, the team worked tirelessly to meet the challenge. This marked Virgo’s entry into the domestic market, and this project opened many doors to further Telekom and later Origo projects.

After the success of its first project, the Online Inquiry Service, Virgo consistently produced various systems that transformed inquiry services into digital offerings. This led to the creation of several platforms, including Telefonkonyv.hu, Telekom Online Inquiry, Szakmai Tudakozó, 197.hu, and Telekom SMS Inquiry.

One particularly unique project was the “Családi Emlékezet” (Family Memory) family tree research software developed for the Ministry of Education. After registration, anyone could use the system to build their family tree, upload data and images. The resulting family tree could be downloaded as a file, and those interested could even print it.

Other exciting Virgo stories include a car inventory financing application developed for a subsidiary of Budapest Bank, and Virgo’s modernization of the Invitel CMS and its portal. The Fővárosi Dugófigyelő (City Traffic Monitoring) was a map-based browser application that displayed traffic data for the Budapest City Council. Additionally, Virgo developed a tree planting planner and a tree processing administrative system for Mecsekerdő Zrt.

In October 2005, the Hungarian social networking web service, which started on 14 April 2002 as WiW (Who is Who), was relaunched as iWiW under the leadership of Gábor Cseh, now available in 15 languages. It was already evident that this Virgo story would make a significant impact. Indeed, iWiW became extraordinarily popular, surpassing the boldest dreams, as hundreds of thousands of Hungarians began using the internet solely because of iWiW. By March 2006, iWiW was the fourth most visited site in Hungary when it was acquired by T-Online, a subsidiary of the Magyar Telekom Group. However, Virgo continued to participate in the development and operation of the community platform, which showed sustained growth for a long time.

In 2006, iWiW was linked to Origo, with the news portal becoming the exit page for iWiW users. As a result, for many years, iWiW users accounted for a significant portion of Origo’s traffic. Following this, Virgo developed several new features for Origo.

The series of corporate projects continued with the development of backend systems and digital services for large enterprises in the banking, telecommunications, and public sectors, and it continues to this day.

iWiW reached its peak in February 2010, with 4.5 million users, 1.46 million unique daily visitors, and 3.3 million page views. However, despite numerous new ideas and innovations, it couldn’t compete with Facebook. On June 30, 2014, iWiW permanently shut down, and the uploaded content is now preserved only in time capsules.

Agile methodologies originated in software development, but today, nearly every organization producing digital products or services applies them in some form. Our transition was not without challenges either, as prior to adopting Agile, Virgo had followed the traditional, predictable waterfall approach for over twelve years when planning development projects.

The Agile transition and mindset-shaping projects we are most proud of include: winning an international tender announced by LogMeIn, our ongoing collaboration with DPD since 2016, and the marketing and procurement management system we developed for Drogerie Markt (DM).

Virgo’s first major e-commerce project came in 2016, when the company was tasked with revamping the webshop of Extreme Digital, the largest domestic e-retailer at the time. The company entrusted Virgo with the largest IT project in its history. We are incredibly proud that the transition went smoothly, with only a temporary and minimal drop in the ranking of Extreme Digital’s products on Google.

This initial success kick-started Virgo’s e-commerce division.

 

The Jóautók.hu used car trading portal launched in Hungary in the summer of 2017. Virgo worked with the editorial team of the automotive news site Totalcar to create a solution that offers a safe, transparent, and convenient platform for buying and selling cars.

Virgo’s e-commerce division quickly strengthened, supporting the online sales operations of partners such as Telenor, Multivitamin.hu, Anda Present, and Építőanyag.hu.

A significant organizational change took place in the life of Virgo Systems, with the establishment of three business units: Enterprise, Product Design, and E-Commerce. The Enterprise business unit began with the arrival of Gábor Tarnavölgyi. The Product Design department, led by Adrián Balla, was also launched, specializing in product design and UX/UI-focused solutions.

The launch of the LogMeIn project was an important milestone this year, as well as the beginning of the partnerships with the RTL Group and Drogerie Markt. Simultaneously, the E-Commerce division was also established.

The company moved one of its offices from Balatonfüred to Veszprém, providing a new location for the expanding team. Negotiations started with Euronics regarding the development of their webshop. Építőanyag.hu joined as a new partner, expanding the client base in the online retail sector.

Virgo Systems launched one of its outstanding projects with the Hungarian National Fishing Association (MOHOSZ). The goal was to create a digital community and tourism platform to engage the 580,000 registered fishing enthusiasts. During the project, the team conducted detailed UX research to build appealing online services that are easy to use and tailored to user needs.

This year began with a collaboration with PPG Trilak, a paint manufacturer, where we developed a “click & collect” solution based on Virgo Corbis to enable franchise partners to offer customers the option to pick up paints. This development was supported by on-site e-commerce consulting and UX research. In the same year, we revamped the National Bank’s Money Museum (Pénzmúzeum)  web portal as well. We contributed to Culinaris’s online presence renewal in the retail food market through the development and consultancy for their webshop. In January 2021, Virgo’s spin-off project, STA (PriceKit), was launched, and in October, the team moved to the office on Szent István körút.

The 2022 rebranding of Telenor, which was renewed under the name Yettel, was also a significant milestone for Virgo Systems, as our long-term collaboration in this project reached a new level. This joint work not only strengthened our partnership but also provided deeper insights into the ever-changing world of the telecommunications sector.

In 2023, Virgo Systems, embracing technological innovation, established its internal team focusing on artificial intelligence, creating new opportunities for automation and data-driven solutions. Throughout the year, we launched strategic projects with Burger King and the Hungarian State Treasury (Magyar Államkincstár) and started our collaboration with Dorsum, working on future banking solutions. Together with Dorsum, we created a new design for the Hungarian State Treasury’s Web Treasury (Webkincstár) and Mobile Treasury (Mobilkincstár) platforms, and as an integrator, we supported the introduction of the Dorsum Clavis securities management platform, supporting our clients’ digital development and competitiveness. We also began a strategic partnership with Profession.hu.

In 2024, a new chapter began in the history of Virgo Systems: Gábor Tarnavölgyi took over the management of the company, and at the beginning of the year, we started our collaboration with Dentsu Hungary. In the hope of building long-term partnerships, we signed the first contracts with OTP and Allianz. Additionally, with the support of the Finnish company, Fluido, Virgo Systems established its own Salesforce Competency Center, supporting Salesforce transformation projects for international clients, further strengthening the company’s international presence.
